Cyberattacks on connected cars could gridlock entire cities

It would require taking over and stranding 20% of a city’s cars to freeze traffic, and only 10% to impede ambulances, physicists calculate.

Cybersecurity researchers have fooled the Tesla Model 3’s automatic navigation system into rapidly braking and taking a wrong turn on the highway.

They placed unobtrusive stickers that drivers wouldn’t see but would fool autopilot into thinking the lane was veering off to the left.

Sold at salvage and auctions, they contain info from drivers’ paired mobile devices, plus highly personal pre-crash video.

The court’s action means that one of the first legal cases involving cyber security risks in cars will go to trial in October.

Beyond potential police surveillance, the plates could be as susceptible to hacking as other wireless and IoT technologies.
